A prized strain for its ability to produce oils suitable for biodiesel production, N. oculata can typically obtain a lipid content of 28%.  In mixotrophic cultures, this can be pushed to 39%.  Additionally, lipid content can reach 54% in mixotrophic cultures supplemented with sucrose.

In addition to being a hardy grower, this strain can be cultured in fresh or salt water.
